Register for Webinar: Understanding Low Back Pain in Weightlifting Populations
Apr 2, 2026, Virtual, Zoom
Low back pain is one of the most common issues seen in strength training populations, yet its causes are often misunderstood. While heavy lifting, “butt-wink,” and disc injuries are frequently blamed, the true contributors to lower back pain are often more complex.
In this presentation, Dr. Richard Ulm will break down the pathomechanics of lower back pain associated with strength training. You’ll gain a clearer understanding of how and why this condition develops, as well as the factors that may contribute to it in athletes and active individuals. The goal is to help coaches and practitioners better manage, treat, and even prevent lower back pain in the clients and athletes they work with.
Dr. Richard Ulm, DC, CSCS, brings a unique combination of professional expertise and personal experience to this topic. He has spent 25 years in the strength training profession and 15 years working as a clinician treating lower back pain. A dedicated lifter himself, he has trained consistently 4–5 days per week for more than 35 years. Dr. Ulm also has firsthand experience with severe back injury, having suffered three large lumbar disc herniations and living with constant back pain for over a decade. Through the knowledge and methods shared in this presentation, he was able to eliminate his back pain and return to training symptom-free.
