Y Balance Test: A Missing Link
Written by FMS YBT
The Y Balance Test (YBT) is a thoroughly researched, yet easy, way to quantify a person’s motor control and demonstrate functional symmetry. It brings the FMS movement patterns together in a triplanar motion allowing us to see how the patterns are really working together. The YBT quarters the body and looks at how the core and each extremity function under bodyweight loads.
This information can be used to identify road blocks to a person’s functional performance including measuring pre and post rehabilitation performance, improvement after performance enhancement programs, dynamic balance for fitness programs, and return to sport readiness.
Y Balance Test Online Course
Y Balance Test Protocol was developed through years of research in injury prevention and identification of motor control changes that occur after injury. This online course includes the background of development along with how to administer the Y Balance Test – Lower Quarter and Upper Quarter.
Included in the course is the extensive research related to the Y Balance Test, as well as suggestions for group testing and videos for you to use as a resource.
The YBT Online Course includes access to over 45 minutes of video content and a downloadable manual. To check your understanding, you will also receive access to the YBT Online exam.

Just finished the course and the exam. Totally worth the time. It cleared up a number of questions I had as well as applications of the YBT that I can put into practice on Monday in PT. Thanks so much for this!

I'm currently 50% finished with the course and have purchased the kit. Am I missing something or is the normative data from the composite score only available if you join move2perform and pay $39 month? Normative data has always been included in any standardized testing kits that I'm familiar with. Thanks for any feedback.

The cut-points are available by using Move2perform. It is software application that uses a research validated algorithm to rank and categorizeinjury risk with evidence based tests and demographic information. Move2Perform contains cut points specific to age/gender/level to identify those at risk for injury as well as normative data for ages 7-80+.The risk cut points are based on multiple published studies as well as studies presented at scientific meetings (specifically Butler 2013, Plisky 2006, Lehr 2013). When risk cut points for a specific group are not published, an algorithm to establish the cut point based on the database of over 62,000 tests. This method of establishing risk cut points was validated by Lehr et al 2013 in collegiate athletes.
Tests that can be used with the software include the Y Balance Test, Functional Movement Screen, Closed Chain Dorsiflexion, several types of hop testing, shoulder ROM for pitchers, and isokinetic testing. Individual, comparison and group reports can be generated by the Move2Perform software. A free 2 week trial is available by contacting info@move2perform.com.
