I understand that the FMS is great for performance athletes where you screen them before implementing a program for them. I'm an athletic trainer who deals with injured high school athletes 90% of the time. How can I use FMS to get my athletes back to the field in a timely manner? I usually don't have 4 weeks or so to heal the injury and screen for movement before returning them to the field. By that time thats 50-75% of the season done.

Hi Dayton-Great question. If an athlete is in pain, then the SFMA would be more appropriate. However, once they can get through the top tier of the SFMA without pain you can introduce the FMS. You can then work on their dysfunctions based on what the scores show while still training the other functional patterns. Keep tabs as often as possible on their progress on the pattern you are focusing on then you can do a complete screen once they have shown 2 or better on that pattern. I would also highly encourage incorporating the Y Balance Test or the Motor Control Screen as part of your return to play protocol. Hope that helps! Feel free to reach out with any additional questions-Eric

How often do you prescreen?
Eric Dagati 5/7/2020 6:49:57 PM
Hi Suzy-I'm not sure I am clear on your question, but I use the movement screen as the entry point for everyone all of the time if possible. This is in conjunction with doing proper diligence with a medical/health history, etc. Hope that helps! Feel free to reach out with any additional questions-Eric

Thank you for this live video on building a training program. I was hoping to have been given a sample of some of the elements that you may use in your assessment and how specific findings may be used to begin to build a personalized training program based on those findings.
Eric Dagati 5/7/2020 6:49:47 PM
Hi Kristi- Thanks for attending! As fas as the assessment, as long as they are not currently in pain, I always start with a movement screen and then from there it is goal specific. For example, if their goal is improving body composition, we would do some type of body fat testing/circumference measurements. If their goal is performance related, I would then perform the FCS if appropriate, as well as any sport-specific screens such as the TPI for golf, etc. When it comes to building a program, unfortunately we didn't have time to get into that because of the backup of questions but we go into that in detail in the FMS Level 2 Online course, where I have multiple case studies that I build fitness programs for and give the rationale for my choices based on their history and movement screen. Hope that helps! Feel free to reach out with any additional questions - Eric

Thank you so much. Being one of the few trainers in Tucson that uses FMS, I needed the reinforcement from this program.
